I wanted to be at the Fortress of Nackhal at first light and to watch the sun rise over the mountains. this meant being on the road at 4am for a 90 minute drive to the place. The fortress is situated at the foot of the mountains with a small settlement around it and larger ones spreading out to ward the sea and the trade routes it was built to protect over a thousand years ago.
I sat on the fortress battlements waiting for sunrise and watched the mist and damp rising from the surrounding palm forest ,as the sun started to warm the land. In the village below small warming fires were being lit. it struck me how a feeling of enormity and trepidation must have been felt by soldiers preparing to try to storm the fort !
